This May long weekend the HPAW cast + WorldGone Awry (yes that’s right) take on the single player campaign of Splinter Cell: Conviction for the PC and Xbox 360 (although in retrospect, only the 360 version is worth playing). This marathon will be delivered via 6 ~hour long parts in HD and SD (for iPods, iPhones, Android Phones, and why not, PSP’s!). Without further ado we give you the Splinter Cell: Conviction Marathon!

The violence is high, Kratos is angry and I’ve never seen crazier Greek mythology!

This game has large maps, a large unit cap and some of the coolest, most crazy matches ever. I won’t try to describe it anymore so just watch the episode to see it all in action (note: I don’t make any claims to being good at it). We have a full cast and a special guest from way over there!

Starting after Christmas (hopefully before New Years but don’t hold youe breath unless your Michael Phelps) we have a great line up of games coming up on HPAW including some of the suggestions we have received and of course we have not forgotten about our Modern Warfare 2 Marathon.

Recently a $10 expansion/DLC was released for FEAR 2 called Reborn. it is an expansion on the single player experience that I feel is much truer to the original FEAR than ever before. Kaisuke was missing for this episode however we are no longer bound by YouTube’s hour-long sometimes you don’t get your episode encoded limit so enjoy this extra long episode. I also like to remind people to help out on the HPAW Wiki, it’s not going to update itself you know.

I would also like to announce that the Mario Party 8 episode which includes a fantastic montage at the beginning has been recoded for the new player. This episode can be found on the sidebar under HPAW Videos or by clicking the read more link on this post.

1. The great backport continues as I slowly make my way backwards and recode/embed all of our videos into our new player to replace YouTube. Maybe I will take requests only at this point so please fire off an email to requests@hpaw.net or simply leave a comment on this post with your requests on what I should restore next.

2. Relating to the announcement above we are proud to announce the long awaited return of the Grand Theft Auto IV Marathon in streamable form.

3. We have an HPAW episode planned for tomorrow Sept. 18th although this may not happen as we have not yet selected a game nor have we confirmed availability of all HPAW cast.

4. This is mostly unrelated but I’d like to mention it anyway. I now volunteer every Tuesday at a local radio show called Melodies in Mind. I am responsible for video production (on a radio show, I know, crazy) and getting the videos on YouTube. So please check out the YouTube channel for Melodies in Mind, there is some amazing music on the show and HPAW’s HCAM is there to capture it. 5. Finally we arrive at our major announcement for the month. Our next marathon has been planned for filming next Friday Sept. 26th. Yes that’s right, a Halo 3: ODST Marathon featuring the HPAW cast and THE RETURN OF NW STRIKER, former HPAW member for those of you new here. Before you ask, we currently do not know if WorldGone Awry will be here for the marathon or not.

As many of you have been wondering if we were going to do Crysis: Warhead the standalone expansion to Crysis. The answer is yes, we have another start to finish marathon on Crysis: Warhead. This marathon features a full cast consisting of Mempf, Teclis, Biske and Kaisuke.

We are currently in the process of making our older content available in this new player and everything up to and including the Resident Evil 5 marathon is already available. Your comments on this post will help us decide which marathons/episodes to do next. We do not expect this to be a short process and it may be quite some time before all videos are available in the new player.

UPDATE: I URGE people to try videos other than the Crysis Marathon before answering this poll. The Crysis Marathon has much higher requirements than our other videos.

Summer of Crysis is a start to finish marathon featuring the cast of the Kingdom Hearts 2 Marathon. We really wanted to do a true start to finish marathon without any large gaps in between any of the parts, just like the KH2 marathon. We are still waiting on a few things like artwork for the marathon before we can start releasing the actual parts. However we felt a preview was in order to show you guys what to expect over the next couple of weeks.

The marathon was filmed at max settings, 1360×768 resolution (over 720P!) and overall looks beautiful.

Also as many of you have noticed the HPAW server has been very unstable lately. This is because of server migration issues on behalf our server host. It is beyond our control although things should be much better from this point on. So please bare with us as we bare with our host until all migration issues have passed.

A couple of side notes:
1. Game was played on the Xbox 360 in 720P, the game is not truly HD and is in fact upscaled to HD.
2. YouTube has been giving us grief for the past couple of weeks and is showing no signs of stopping. Expect YouTube versions delays.

Hello and welcome to a special HPAW project. As some of you know I (Mempf for you new people) am a huge F.E.A.R. fan (enough to use the .’s most of the time apparently). And although I was initially a little disappointed with F.E.A.R. 2, the more I think about it it really is a fantastic game.

So what is FEAR M.E.? It is a marathon of sorts. Not of our traditional kind though. For F.E.A.R. 2 a group of people would ruin the mood and immersion the game so well creates. I will however be using the HPAW microphone to capture my feedback and comments of the story alone with other things.

I do plan to play through the whole game (Monolith I promise this will only make more sales!) however my time frame for completing this is currently unknown. Oh and FEAR M.E. means FEAR the Mempf Experience so please enjoy.

Thats right people the return of the unofficial episode, this time in the form of the final HD test.

Teclis and Biske join me (Mempf) as we play online matchmaking followed by the just voted game of the year Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots.

This test’s goal is to simulate an actual HPAW episode. We know not everyone wants the HD version so the old format (which can be put straight onto any iPod/iPhone and most other devices) will remain but look even better than before. The bitrate on HD Test 3 is higher than required resulting in a larger file size. Future tests will hopefully be smaller with little to no quality loss.

Some of you may have guessed that this was coming from the previous HD test and the talk in the Fallout Marathon. Well here it is the Dead Space episode with hopefully improved (though not HD) quality. Capture was done with the PC version of the game and capture from PC which has proven problematic in the past. (Seems great this time)

Well this concludes our Fallout 3 Marathon but we have only scratched the surface into this huge game so pick it up if you liked what you saw.

In this bonus video we have some fun and give our impressions of the game.

We have taken some the the suggestions and comments given to us in this past week (even World) and I have increased the video bitrate, raising the quality level but making the files a little larger. What does this mean to people you watch on Youtube, most likely nothing, download the high quality ones. Just right-click and and select save as or save target as depending on your browser.

Overall length of this marathon has yet to be decided but currently we have over 7 hours of game footage.

It is taking place a the Orpheum theater in Vancouver. We will not be taking HCAM (our video camera) partly due to the fact we will not be allowed to film inside and the fact that we have a marathon this weekend so I don’t have the time to edit any additional videos.

At the start of September Teclis and I (Mempf) have started University, WorldGone Awry is completing another year of school here and Nw Striker is working full time.

Because of this and mainly for this month we may not be on schedule (don’t expect to much this month). We hope to get things up and running again by October when I can better balance school and my other activites such as HPAW. We will hopefully NOT be ending HPAW come 2009 which should make most of you very happy.

That said hopefully we will finish the SSBB tournament this weekend and film it within a week of that.

So what are the people complaining about? Taking a look at the review Amazon tagged as “the most helpful critical review,” it’s pretty clear. “First of all, the game incorporates a draconian DRM system that requires you to activate over the internet, and limits you to a grand total of 3 activations,” the disgruntled user wrote. “If you reach that limit, then you’ll have to call EA in order to add one extra activation. That’s not as simple as it sounds, since when you reach that point EA will assume that you, the paying customer, are a filthy pirating thief. You will need to provide proof of purchase, reasons why the limit was reached…”

This same thing happened with Bioshock for the PC but 2K Games later removed the DRM. DRM does not prevent piracy, it forces people into it and thats just not right.

Welcome to HPAW’s second official tournament featuring Super Smash Bros Brawl for the Nintendo Wii!

The way this tournament is being done is all in order to combat lag and to make this as convenient for us all. Unlike most tournaments this one will take place over the course of a week, please read on for more information.

I have decided that HPAW will be leaving the proprietary, Microsoft owned WMV format we have used since we have had “high-quality” versions.

H.264 will be a major increase in downloadable quality and I am very excited to see how we can use it to improve HPAW.

Starting with the Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition Marathon all future videos will be released in three formats:
1. High-Quality H.264 for viewing on the PC.
2. Low-Quality H.264 for viewing on a iPod or PSP (Will not be used in Marathons).
3. Google Video for those to lazy, can’t or just don’t want to download the videos.

To view the new format you may need to download the proper codec. I recommend either the CCCP or the K-Lite Codec Pack or as King of Iceland suggests the VLC Media Player

If you have problems with H.264 video our staff will be glad to help you, well maybe not WorldGone Awry.

I have filmed another teaser for the Resident Evil 4 Marathon in this new format which I would like to have everyone test and give feedback on the quality of the video.

Full Battlefield 2142: Northern Strike Promotional Video

I am starting with finishing uploading the Kingdom Hearts 2 Marathon (I only uploaded up to part 26 before).

Then after that I will begin to upload the HPAW episodes from Gamespot to Google. There will not be WMV or iPod versions for these videos.

So how does this link to HPAW? Well for starters Ar4wy has been on HPAW before (Super Smash Bros. Melee). Also our very own Nw Striker is a cast member of the show. The primary setting for the show is the high school that we all attend so enjoy it and welcome to our world.

I would like to thank everyone who participated on a very good tournament.

The starting time is 10:30AM PST (if you need to know what that is in your local time zone please use Google to find out).

It is required that all participants have their Xboxs on and ready to accept game invites from “Ellite Striker” (please add him to your friends list if you have not done so yet).
If possible it would be advised that you also come to the HPAW homepage as the live chat will be used for tournament announcements such as whose match is up but if this is not possible just be on Xbox live ready to go.

Pleas note that if “Ellite Striker” does not get a friend request before the tournament starts he will send one to you so please accept it if you failed to add him.

Please be aware if we have all 9 teams show up there will be a free for all match with ONE person from each team. The person that scores the lowest will have his team eliminated.

THE FOLLOWING IS VERY IMPORTANT!!!!!

At least 15 min before 10:30AM PST please email me at mempf.com@gmail.com saying whether or not your team is ready!!!! If you do not do this it will be assumed you are forfeiting the match however we will still try to invite you to your match anyway but there will be little tolerance at that point so PLEASE email me conforming your team is coming.

Remember to add “Ellite Striker” to your Xbox Live friends list if you are in the tournament.

Here is the important information that ALL combatants must read:

EVERYONE MUST ADD “Ellite Striker” TO THEIR FRIENDS LISTS
This is because on February 10th (tournament day) Nw Striker AKA Ellite Striker will be inviting people into games.

Basically everyone participating will come on February 10th at 10:30AM to this site with their Xboxs ON and ready to accept an invite into your Halo 2 match. Matches will be handled one at a time so people further down on the bracket will have a later match. The site chat box will be restricted to tournament chat ONLY during the tournament.

If you have any questions please leave a comment and we will answer it when we can.

We cover everything we do to make HPAW: before HPAW, during HPAW and after HPAW. I hope you all enjoy it as we all (mainly Dark Elf and I) worked very hard on it.

Make sure you watch it to the last second!

Remember about the surprise but it is going to take me longer than I first thought so expect it in the coming days. Trust me though, the wait is worth it.

This is a two part episode and remember there is still a surprise to come in the next day or so.

The Halo 2 tournament will have many teams of 2, no more no less. Which means you will need a partner to play with you. It will be an elimination tournament so if you lose once your out.

When:
-Saturday February 10th.
-10:30AM PST
-Please have at least 3 hours to spend in the tournament. (Unless you get eliminated)

Official Rules:
-No super jumps.
-No hacking/cheating.
-No referee killing. (Referee will be in a yellow suit.)
-Games will be 15 min maximum.
-Game will be first to 25 kills or whatever team has the most points when time expires.
-In the result of a tie the winner will be determined by a match to 10 kills.
-Game type will be Team Slayer with human weapons on the map.

Failure to comply with these rules will result in immediate disqualification.

I’m proud to announce today that the next marathon will probably be Mass Effect.

This is extremely rough and no details other than the fact that it will likely be a first impression marathon which means minimal to no playing time before hand.

Other currently planned marathons are Metroid Prime 3: Corruption and Halo 3.

The focus of the chat will be the Wii and I will be taking and answering your guys questions about it.

First of all the review is fine. Jeff was not biased and reviewed it fair and square. He enjoyed the game hence why the tilt was a 10. The problem was that Gamespot’s reviews are “too good” and they deducted points for the Wii’s features being forced onto Zelda. Stuff like the Wii controller speaker and the fact the sword swinging didn’t feel any better than using a button. The important thing is he enjoyed the game and we will all as well.

That being said I would wait to see what the Gamecube version of Twilight Princess gets as most the negative seems due to the Wii specific features and not the game itself.

With THAT said I still think the more enjoyable fun version will be the Wii’s.

UPDATE: It seems that other reviews are being less strict than Gamespot’s. IGN gave it a 9.5/10 and 1UP 10/10. So this just goes to show that reading one review for a game is not enough.

I am reconsidering my choice of using youtube as our primary video host.

It has come to my attention that videos hosted on youtube are lower quality than the ones on gamespot. I do not however want to use gamespot as our primary host. I am thinking of using google video for the following reasons.

1. Video quality although lower than gamespot is much better than youtube.
2. You can fast forward to any part in the video without it being loaded first. (I love this)
3. It’s google so they are not going anywhere (reliability)
4. Has the power of the google search engine to help find videos.
5. If you click on the go to google video link on the embedded video you can watch it in full screen and rate the video. (Please rate it)

UPDATE: I have uploaded all the videos since we started using youtube to google and replaced all the embedded videos on this site so please take a look at the new google video player and remember you can jump to any part of the video now.

My highlights of the final as knifing the best guy on their team (maybe you heard about it on Tournament TV) and I also single handedly took down an enemy walking as an infantry unit. (with RDX)

UPDATE: After watching the re-run if tournament tv I noticed for about 3-5min they focused on me. If you want to know it’s when they follow the person who goes cloaked and runs after a tank and nearly gets blown up by it. Thats me. Then after they still follow me for a little while.

UPDATE 2: I have uploaded the part of the War of the Titan final with me in it as described above for your convenience.

However now we can’t use the beacon on the titan.

In other news we unofficially won the semi-finals in the BF2142 tournament. However the opposing team said we had cheated and now the game in under review of the admins.
