Xenosaga Episode 1 Marathon

A side project I have been working on is a play through of Xenosaga Episode 1: Der Wille zur Macht for the PS2 in the emulator we used for the Kingdom Hearts Marathon, PCSX2. Originally planned for WorldGone Awry to play however this proved impossible given our respective schedules. The marathon starts out a bit rough because of learning curve required to get the game to run properly (it’s much harder than Kingdom Hearts) but things smooth out later on. Most of this marathon has already been filmed and a lot of that was filmed live. With that out of the way if your into space, spaceships, Android, or JRPGs than this marathon is for you!

Kingdom Hearts Marathon

The next HPAW project has been decided and filming has begun! Mempf and Teclis will be playing a game start to finish and we will release a new part everyday once we get going! Teclis will be the one playing. We will be using an emulator for ease of capture and quality of video. Although we have done start to finish marathons before this one will be modeled on the Giant Bomb endurance run for scheduling reasons and length of game. The original intent is to not play this live however there may be the occasional live part. Keep an eye on the HPAW twitter for more info.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution Marathon Live

I am proud to announce our next marathon project will be Deus Ex Human Revolution and if everything goes according to plan we will be streaming it live. The game is released at ~~9:00pm PST August 22nd (tomorrow)~~ 12:01AM PST August 23rd and our live stream should be available some time soon after that. Joining Mempf will be WorldGone Awry who will be playing. This will take place on PC however I’m sure World will want to use an Xbox 360 controller. Metroid Prime 3: Corruption Marathon Continues At Last!

You read that title correctly! About 4 years later I have decided to finish off the Metroid Prime 3 Marathon. Partly in honour of Metoid’s 25th anniversary and partly because I recently got Metroid Prime Trilogy I have filmed the ending parts of the marathon. These final parts only feature Mempf and were originally streamed live on Justin/Twitch TV. If you love Metroid, you’ll love this, enjoy!

Luigi’s Mansion Marathon

Taking a break from the F.E.A.R. M.E. Again project and with a new Luigi’s Mansion on the way for 3DS we decided to take a look at one of the Gamecube’s launch titles, Lugi’s Mansion. However there is a twist, we did not use a Gamecube and we did not use a Wii to play the game with. We used the Dolphin emulator to play the game at HD resolutions and anti-aliasing, and it looks pretty good even today. The game does not however support widescreen so the final output resolution on the HD version ends up being 1024×768. Playing the marathon is Mempf who is joined from the U.K. by Dante the Jedi. Oh look you’ve won a mansion, let’s take a look inside….

Portal 2 Marathon

By popular demand and largely because Valve released the Portal 2 soundtrack for free I decided that our Co-op marathon while awesome was not enough. We need the full single player story as well! The sequel to a game we covered in an episode needed a marathon and here it is with one of the best cast we have ever had! Mempf, WorldGone Awry, Kaisuke, Dark Elf, Dante the Jedi over Skype, new guest Master P, and we are later joined by Teclis. This is a full start to finish marathon with Dark Elf, WorldGone Awry and Kaisuke as the people playing the game. This could be our best marathon yet!

Portal 2 Co-op Marathon

The cake is still a lie, but it does not matter, because we are robots now! The HPAW cast moves to do its first ever PC co-op marathon using a computer built out of spare parts. Mempf, Teclis, Kaisuke, WorldGone Awry and Biske come together to complete the cooperative testing experience that is Portal 2. This may be Biske’s last HPAW event as both he and Teclis are leaving the country in a few days (Teclis will be back in a month).

Playing as Atlas is both Mempf and WorldGone Awry and playing as P-Body we have Kaisuke and Teclis. We recorded the “Atlas” computer in 720P+ resolution for your viewing pleasure. Haven’t played the single player? Don’t worry as this marathon kept single player spoilers to a minimum. Just relax and enjoy us struggle to figure out Portal 2′s puzzles, who knows, it might even be funny!

Crysis 2 Marathon

Patch 1.2 released for Crysis 2. This has apparently fixed the Nano-Catalyst and melee after death bugs. I have not yet tested the accuracy of this. Never the less, this entire marathon was filmed at version 1.1 and was affected by the previously mentioned bugs.

Crysis returns to the world again, and we have a marathon to cover it. Welcome to HPAW’s Crysis 2 Marathon played on PC (version 1.1). Joining us into the battered city of New York is survival expert WorldGone Awry, Teclis, Kaisuke, Nw Striker and our soup expert Biske (will he even read this?). I (Mempf) will be the one playing this marathon where a large focus will be exploration of the environments and collection of the collectibles. Will Crysis 2 live up to its name? Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D Marathon in 3D! Coming June!

I am proud to announce that HPAW will be acquiring a new 3D camera for an upcoming Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D marathon on the Nintendo 3DS! The game should be coming out in June and the marathon will be on launch day and first encounter (well, it is Ocarina of Time, so yeah).

~~We expect a full cast for the remake of this legendary game so get your 3D monitors/TV’s now, because your going to need them!~~

Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep Marathon

It has finally arrived, the Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep Marathon! Join Mempf, Teclis and Kaisuke on the latest (but chronologically first) Kingdom Hearts game on the PSP. This marathon is starting as first encounter meaning on one here has played the game previous to filming the marathon.

We don’t claim to be experts at the game nor is this intended as a guide in anyway. We decided to play the game on proud mode to unlock the secret movie. The first “chunk” of the marathon was filmed in 24 hours and yielded over 12 hours of footage. This is as far as we have filmed as of the writing of the sentence. We do plan on filming more of the game although “finishing it” has yet to be decided, however, anything filmed after that first “chunk” may not be first encounter.

There is also a “How Many Deaths?” contest on the forums, entries will close when Part 6 is posted. There will be prizes! Now with that all said let’s get to the marathon!

Splinter Cell: Conviction Marathon

First all all, the things we went through to bring you this marathon, delay after delay, technical problems and DRM. But we did it and its done!

This May long weekend the HPAW cast + WorldGone Awry (yes that’s right) take on the single player campaign of Splinter Cell: Conviction for the PC and Xbox 360 (although in retrospect, only the 360 version is worth playing). This marathon will be delivered via 6 ~hour long parts in HD and SD (for iPods, iPhones, Android Phones, and why not, PSP’s!). Without further ado we give you the Splinter Cell: Conviction Marathon!

Mass Effect 2 Marathon

On Saturday we started to film our Mass Effect 2 Marathon; just days after the game launched we bring you what could be our best marathon yet.

Featuring Mempf, Teclis, Nw Striker, Kaisuke and Biske we start a new character and dive into the amazing world of Mass Effect. I highly recommend watching the HD version as the quality is near perfect. We recommend VLC media player or if your on Windows 7, the videos should just work. Halo 3: ODST Marathon

Did anyone mention HPAW Retro? No I don’t mean old games, I mean old cast. That’s right we have Nw Striker AND WorldGone Awry in the studio for this special expansion. I say special expansion because a lot of what I saw during the marathon wasn’t traditional Halo 3. What I saw was a mix of Halo, Metroid Prime and Star Wars Republic Commando.

What about details? Well we have a 6 person cast consisting of Mempf, Teclis, Kaisuke, Biske, Nw Striker and WorldGone Awry. This is a start to finish marathon however there were some technical issues that screwed up the order a little, more on this later. We played two person Co-op on two different Xbox’s (no split-screen) with Nw Striker playing on the recording screen.

HPAW September 2009: Announcements

Another September, another year of school for many of us including myself and Teclis. I am much more busy this semester than I could have imagined. DON’T PANIC! HPAW has a few public service announcements which will hopefully cheer up those September blues. PLEASE READ THE ENTIRE POST SO YOU DON’T MISS ANYTHING.

1. The great backport continues as I slowly make my way backwards and recode/embed all of our videos into our new player to replace YouTube. Maybe I will take requests only at this point so please fire off an email to requests@hpaw.net or simply leave a comment on this post with your requests on what I should restore next.

2. Relating to the announcement above we are proud to announce the long awaited return of the Grand Theft Auto IV Marathon in streamable form.

3. We have an HPAW episode planned for tomorrow Sept. 18th although this may not happen as we have not yet selected a game nor have we confirmed availability of all HPAW cast.

4. This is mostly unrelated but I’d like to mention it anyway. I now volunteer every Tuesday at a local radio show called Melodies in Mind. I am responsible for video production (on a radio show, I know, crazy) and getting the videos on YouTube. So please check out the YouTube channel for Melodies in Mind, there is some amazing music on the show and HPAW’s HCAM is there to capture it. You can also listen to the show live at 8:00-10:00pm PST every Tuesday at http://cjsf.ca.

5. Finally we arrive at our major announcement for the month. Our next marathon has been planned for filming next Friday Sept. 26th. Yes that’s right, a Halo 3: ODST Marathon featuring the HPAW cast and THE RETURN OF NW STRIKER, former HPAW member for those of you new here. Before you ask, we currently do not know if WorldGone Awry will be here for the marathon or not.

Summer of Crysis: Crysis Warhead Marathon

Goodbye YouTube

Well it seems like it finally happened. We got “3 strikes” on our YouTube account and automatically suspended. We saw this coming a couple of weeks ago and started to make preparations in case this occurred. We will not let this affect HPAW as we now have our own video player that should work for most people.

We are currently in the process of making our older content available in this new player and everything up to and including the Resident Evil 5 marathon is already available. Your comments on this post will help us decide which marathons/episodes to do next. We do not expect this to be a short process and it may be quite some time before all videos are available in the new player.

In other news, the Crysis marathon has been completed with the release of the combined Part 9 & 10. So please check out the front page and try the new video player for videos going back to RE5. Also take the following poll and leave your comments. For video playback help please email videosupport@hpaw.net for assistance.

Summer of Crysis: Crysis Marathon

Welcome to the long awaited (by us) Crysis Marathon. Crysis is a game which I have wanted to feature on HPAW since it came out, however, my PC never had the power until now. It wasn’t that my computer couldn’t handle Crysis at max settings, it’s that it couldn’t handle recording Crysis at the same time. The framerate was just to low to even play.

Now a new video card and quad core cpu later, the problem with recording is not “gone” but now the game remains playable. Turning down the settings was always an option but I don’t think anything but max settings really show off the true beauty and excellent design that Crysis has to offer. To compliment this I am using better encoding settings than normal, including a raised bitrate and a slower, higher quality encoding method.

Summer of Crysis Preview

Hello and welcome to the preview of the upcoming HPAW project, Summer of Crysis.

Summer of Crysis is a start to finish marathon featuring the cast of the Kingdom Hearts 2 Marathon. We really wanted to do a true start to finish marathon without any large gaps in between any of the parts, just like the KH2 marathon. We are still waiting on a few things like artwork for the marathon before we can start releasing the actual parts. However we felt a preview was in order to show you guys what to expect over the next couple of weeks.

The marathon was filmed at max settings, 1360×768 resolution (over 720P!) and overall looks beautiful.

HPAW HD Testing

Some of you may have noticed that I have uploaded two high definition test videos to YouTube in order to test the new “fmt=22″ format (aka 720P). These tests do not mean that HPAW will be presented in high definition. In fact they pretty much mean the opposite. I have found that processing time is over 4x longer for HD content and the files sizes will be in the multiples of gigabytes. It would likely take over 24 hours to get a video from filming to online if we filmed in HD as opposed to the current 3-5 hours.

We have taken some the the suggestions and comments given to us in this past week (even World) and I have increased the video bitrate, raising the quality level but making the files a little larger. What does this mean to people you watch on Youtube, most likely nothing, download the high quality ones. Just right-click and and select save as or save target as depending on your browser.

As an experiment for a potential new way to release marathons (and maybe episodes) I have made the entire 52 parts of the Kingdom Hearts 2 Marathon available for download for the first time. The files are all in their original WMV quality.

How do I get it you ask? Bittorrent. To be able to download this and future releases you will need to have a bittorrent client. Don’t worry it’s not as complicated as it may seem.

HPAW recommends µTorrent for Windows and Transmission for all other platforms (Mac/Linux). For guides on how to use bittorrent please click here.

UPDATE: On Wednesday June 25th we filmed parts 8-11 and tried increasing the brightness due to feedback thus far. This is the reason in the delay on part 5 which I had to edit while still recording the marathon. A typo was discovered in the credits with the music (lists the wrong song) and I have decided not to fix this (6 hour delay) in order to get the part out sooner. Teclis was unable to join us for filming.

Parts 1-7 of the Metal Gear Solid 4 marathon have been filmed and will be uploaded over the next few days. We will be filming more of the marathon in the coming week. Cast includes Mempf, WorldGone Awry, Teclis, Nw Striker and Slayer. We will attempt this marathon on YouTube but as some as you have noticed MGS4 videos don’t tend to last long on YouTube.

-Difficulty currently undecided.

Kingdom Hearts 2 Marathon Uploaded

A topic in the forums has inspired me to re-upload all older HPAW episodes that were hosted only on Gamespot.

I am starting with finishing uploading the Kingdom Hearts 2 Marathon (I only uploaded up to part 26 before).

Then after that I will begin to upload the HPAW episodes from Gamespot to Google. There will not be WMV or iPod versions for these videos.

Please note I do not have copies of the previous marathons other than the Kingdom Hearts 2 one so please don’t ask.

UPDATE: After learning that Mass Effect will be released till Q2 (we thought it was Q1) the next marathon may not be Mass Effect. Just know that there will be one and it may be next. It will all depend on what comes out in Q1.

I’m proud to announce today that the next marathon will probably be Mass Effect.

This is extremely rough and no details other than the fact that it will likely be a first impression marathon which means minimal to no playing time before hand.

Other currently planned marathons are Metroid Prime 3: Corruption and Halo 3.

Gamespot Zelda Review: My thoughts

All right guys I read the review and I have something to say.

First of all the review is fine. Jeff was not biased and reviewed it fair and square. He enjoyed the game hence why the tilt was a 10. The problem was that Gamespot’s reviews are “too good” and they deducted points for the Wii’s features being forced onto Zelda. Stuff like the Wii controller speaker and the fact the sword swinging didn’t feel any better than using a button. The important thing is he enjoyed the game and we will all as well.

That being said I would wait to see what the Gamecube version of Twilight Princess gets as most the negative seems due to the Wii specific features and not the game itself.

With THAT said I still think the more enjoyable fun version will be the Wii’s.

UPDATE: It seems that other reviews are being less strict than Gamespot’s. IGN gave it a 9.5/10 and 1UP 10/10. So this just goes to show that reading one review for a game is not enough.

The steps to a marathon

1. Choosing: Find a game we want to do a marathon on, sometimes it’s a given other times it requires some user input (Gears of War or Splinter Cell)
2. Planning: Plan a day(s) that work for everyone so that we can film the marathon as smoothly as possible.
3. Filming: Do the marathon and record it in manageable parts. This is where everything can go wrong causing delays and other problems. It is also the best part for us as we get many hours to play the game.
4. Break: We all go and sleep or something.
5. Editing: Getting the video in a publishable state for uploading to the public.
5. Uploading: Making the video available to the public.
6. Publishing: Creating the proper pages on this site for easy access to all of you.

And thats how you do a marathon in a very basic way.

Youtube or Google Video

Hey guys,

I am reconsidering my choice of using youtube as our primary video host.

It has come to my attention that videos hosted on youtube are lower quality than the ones on gamespot. I do not however want to use gamespot as our primary host. I am thinking of using google video for the following reasons.

1. Video quality although lower than gamespot is much better than youtube.
2. You can fast forward to any part in the video without it being loaded first. (I love this)
3. It’s google so they are not going anywhere (reliability)
4. Has the power of the google search engine to help find videos.
5. If you click on the go to google video link on the embedded video you can watch it in full screen and rate the video. (Please rate it)

UPDATE: I have uploaded all the videos since we started using youtube to google and replaced all the embedded videos on this site so please take a look at the new google video player and remember you can jump to any part of the video now.
